* The study. Laukkanen T, Khan H, Zaccardi F, Laukkanen JA. Association between sauna bathing and fatal cardiovascular and all-cause mortality events. JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015;175(4):542-548. 2,315 men aged 42 to 60 in Eastern Finland, followed a median of 20.7 years. Compared with one session a week, 4 to 7 sessions a week were associated with a hazard ratio of 0.60 (95% CI 0.46 to 0.80) for death from any cause, about 40% lower. Heart-related death: Laukkanen T et al., BMC Medicine 2018, 1,688 adults, hazard ratio 0.23 (0.08 to 0.65). Stroke: Kunutsor SK et al., Neurology 2018, 1,628 adults, hazard ratio 0.39 (0.18 to 0.84).

What it does and does not show. These are observational findings in Finnish adults using a traditional hot dry sauna (about 79 °C, stone heater). They show an association. They do not show that sauna use caused the difference, no randomised trial has tested it, and the comparison group used a sauna once a week, not never. The findings do not apply to infrared cabins, blankets, tents, steam rooms, or hybrid saunas in infrared mode.

Safety. Talk to your doctor before using a sauna if you have a heart or blood-pressure condition, a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator, are pregnant or trying to conceive, or take medication that affects blood pressure. Never use a sauna after drinking alcohol. Drink water, cool down slowly, and get out if you feel dizzy or unwell. Children are never left in a sauna alone.
